NEXT ! ESSENTIAL SMALTI Learn the basics of working with the most desired mosaic element in the world! I will demonstrate how to safely cut both Mexican & Italian smalti with a variety of tools including hammer and hardi, wheeled glass cutters. and Starrett cutters. Because I love using other elements alongside smalti, I'll show you how you can use Emaux glass, a thicker cousin of stained glass made in France,| French Litovi, a new manufactured stone with a rich matte finish that cuts like smalti and "chunk glass" (literally chunks of raw glass saved by glass factories to be melted down in molds or glass casting ). I will show how to create over 8 different shapes and sizes that create texture, shadows and interest. You will also learn the basics of Andamento (flow) and how it can create visual comfort and avoid chaos in your work. We will use all of our cuts to create a 'sample board' of cuts for your future work.

SMALTI ABSTRACT This course is an exploration of color, texture and the idea that, even if you are not artistically trained, you are capable of transferring your feelings and thoughts in an artistic way. Find out why abstracts win the most awards! You will learn how to approach your work with spontaneity and create your own style.
You will learn two concepts of abstract including "abstracted" (taken from nature, people, places, & things) and "pure abstract" (think Jackson Pollack). This class will include one of each style. You will also learn the principles of composition, balance and weight, and how to connect shapes and create movement with Andamento techniques. In addition to smalti, we will experiment with glass rods, stringers, wire, millefiori and found objects in addition to using Litovi stone, Emaux glass and chunk glass "SMALTI BASICS" or similar experience helpful
EMBEDDED MEMORIES The first time I saw a memory jar was 1994 and I almost fainted! It was enchanting, romantic and fascinating and I set out to find exactly the right medium to re-create it.
